Iwona Lemke-Konart

Iwona Lemke (later known as Iwona Lemke-Konart) was an influential (performance) artist, filmmaker and writer rooted in the Polish neo-avantgarde of the 70s and 80s.

This historic performance is documented in the book ‘Iwona Lemke, 1983 – 1984’, by Iwona Lemke Konart and Galeria Pro/La and published by Partum School of the Positive Nihilism of Art, Copenhagen 1986.
Lemke-Konart’s body of work has recently been highlighted by the Warsaw-based Arton Foundation’s ‘Not Yet Written Stories – Women Artists' Archives Online’ project, which works to ‘address the visibility of avant-garde women artists within European art heritage’. The performances documented in these booklets feature prominently in this project’s digital archive of Lemke’s work.

(A) The Last Thing, 1984. Staple-bound, 14.5 x 21 cm, 10 pp. Transparent vellum cover sheet with hand-stamped title and stamp of a ship. Contains xeroxed sheets with stills from her performances such as 'Art Is In Life' and 'Pro-La'. Numbered in pencil on back 46/100.
(B) The Last Thing, 1984. Staple-bound, 21 x 14.5 cm, 16 pp. Stamped vellum cover. Xeroxed drawings and images of the 1983 Pro-La performance, and a text sheet featuring the Pro-La Manifesto (in Polish). Numbered 70/200. (total 2).

Artist’s book printed black on white stock with hand-drawn elements in pencil, staplebound in grey printed wraps. Edition 34 of 50. Signed, numbered, and dated by the artist.
The Limits of Human Possibilities is a multimedia piece including not only this book but also writings, sketches, performances, photographs, and videos. Across these works, the artist traces the outline of her body in a series of yoga-like poses and then juxtaposes these outlines with the contours of mountains.
